Forest Fire in Indonesia

A large fire covering about 4,200 hectares of land had broken out at Tesso Nilo, a precious place of rainforest in the heart of Riau. As satellite data of the fire hotspots shows, forest fires have affected the length and breadth of Indonesia. Among the worst hit areas are southern Kalimantan (Borneo) and western Sumatra. (Salim, 2019)
200 hectares comprising a mix of acacia plantation and secondary forest areas were burnt.  The wildfires that are now raging in Brazil’s Amazon at a record rate serve as a fresh warning, if not a lesson, for Indonesia, which along with Brazil possesses the largest rainforests in the world. The governments of the two countries have come under criticism for not doing enough to stop deforestation, which results from, among other factors, forest fires.
Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto said Wednesday the government was focusing on efforts to prevent forest and land fires. Anticipatory measures will include community education in areas near forests, considering a report from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency that found humans were responsible for 90 percent of forest fires.
9 AUGUST
The fire was detected in the afternoon. The government and sub-district police, along with Tesso Nilo National Park personnel and WWF staff, worked hard to put out the fire with the available tools and resources.
10 AUGUST
The blazing fire continued. Additional support such as compatible masks, oxygen cans and food supplies were deployed from our Pekanbaru field office.
11 AUGUST
Despite the team working tirelessly to put out the fire, the dry weather and hot temperatures allowed it to spread aggressively. Emergency items like water pumps, water tanks (pictured), masks and 1000-metre hose were some of the critical things the fire-fighting team needed. 182 hectares of land were already burnt. But thanks to the solid teamwork and fire-fighting capabilities, the camp managed to survive the fire unscathed.

12 AUGUST

By the third day, the fire had reached just 50 metres away from the entrance gate of the FES camp.
Here is the link to the footage on Youtube :
The Program Manager of WWF Riau Nurchalis Fadhli, and the Tesso Nilo National Park Head Halasan Tulus flew off to visit the fire location to oversee the team in the fire extinguishing operations at the site.

13 AUGUST

The fire was finally contained in the afternoon thanks to the persistence and collaborative efforts which include the mahouts, park authorities, local firefighters and WWF staff. After several intense days, the fire was finally under control.

14 – 18 AUGUST

Around 400 hectares of the burnt area near the FES camp was entirely extinguished. The team started patrols in the burnt areas, dousing the land with generous amounts of water to completely put out the fire.
During the patrol, they found locals who were building a hut close to the Tapa river. This was near the burnt area, and precautionary actions were taken immediately to prevent activities that could potentially trigger new fires.

19 AUGUST

Fire recurred in several spots again. A joint team including WWF tried to extinguish the fire. Up to this point, efforts to put out the fire are still ongoing.

20 – 21 AUGUST

A health examination for the elephants was arranged. Initial plans to send those involved in the fire-fighting operations to undergo a medical check-up were postponed to next week as the team needed to focus on putting out the fire. Though the number of hotspots has been significantly reduced, our work is far from over.
Stepping up on intensive monitoring work in the following weeks is critical due to the extremely dry season and human activities inside and around the national park. Additionally, Tesso Nilo is currently home to iconic Sumatran wildlife with an estimated 113 to 180 wild Asian elephants and two Sumatran Tigers.

Jaka Tarub and Nawang Wulan

Jaka Tarub was a handsome young man. He was very popular in the village. Many young girls fell in love with him. However Jaka Tarub thought that they were not beautiful enough to be his wife. That's why he was still single. He wanted to have a very beautiful wife.As always.

Jaka Tarub went to the forest to collect some woods. Suddenly he heard some noise from the waterfall. He was curious. The noise was from the girls taking a bath in the waterfall.Slowly, Jaka Tarub walked to the area. When he arrived there, he saw seven beautiful girls taking a bath. He was really amazed by their beauty. After they were finished, the girls slowly took their shawls. Amazingly after they wore the shawls, they flew to the sky.

"They were not humans. They were fairies!" said Jaka Tarub suprized.

After that Jaka Tarub went home. He was very restless. He was still thinking about those seven beautiful girls.
On the next day, Jaka Tarub then decided to go back to the waterfall. When those fairies were taking a bath, he stole one of their shawls. And that made one fairy could not fly back to the sky. She cried. Jaka Tarub then approached her. "What's wrong? Why are you crying?"

"I lost my shawl. I cannot go back home. All my sisters have left me. My name is Nawang Wulan. I will give you anything if you can find my shawl." said the fairy.

"I'll help you. But if we can't find it, you can stay at my house. You can be my wife," said Jaka Tarub.

Then Jaka Tarub pretended to look for the shawl. And of course they could not find it. After that they went to Jaka Tarub's home. Later they got married. They had a baby girl. They had a happy life. They always had enough rice to eat. They did not have to work hard like their neighbors. It was because Nawang Wulan used her magic in cooking. One day, Jaka Tarub asked her about the magic. Nawang Wulan did not tell him the secret and asked him not to open the cooking pan's lid. She said that if Jaka Tarub opened the lid, they had to work hard to get a lot of rice to cook.

One day, Jaka Tarub was really curious. He then opened the cooking pan's lid. He saw there was only a small portion of rice to cook. When she got home, Nawang Wulan knew that Jaka Tarub had opened the lid. She was angry because she already lost the magic in cooking. Now she had to take a big portion of rice to cook.

Slowly there was not enough rice in the silo. And when Nawang Wulan wanted to take the last portion of rice, she found her shawl. Jaka Tarub hide the shawl in the silo. Nawang Wulan was really happy. She then said, "I will go home now. Take care of our daughter. When there is full moon, take her out of the house and I'll come to get her."

Nawang Wulan then flew to the sky. Jaka Tarub was really sad. And to keep the promise, Jaka Tarub always went out of the house with his daughter when there was full moon. But Nawang Wulan never came back.

Question

1. Why was Jaka Tarub still single?
2. What was the noise Jaka Tarub heard?
3. What happen after Jaka Tarub stole one of the fairies shawl?
4. Where did Jaka Tarub and Nawang Wulan go after they could not find the shawl?
5. Why Nawang Wulan ask Jaka Tarub not to open the cooking pan lid?

My Not-So-Productive Holiday

At the end of 2019, I received my school report. My learning result was not bad but also not too good. My mother felt a little disappointed and I promise her I'll study harder on the next semester. Actually, there was another school's event called "Dewa Athena" on that day. Dewa Athena is a sport event held by the student council. My classmates and I were so excited at that time. Some of us were participated in the game, while the others supported the players. Unfortunately, we didn't win but it was fine because we had been already tried.

Finally, after that big day, I was going on holiday. Actually, I didn't go out of Bandung. I just stayed at home lazily. But the good thing were I could spent my time with my family, cleaned my bedroom, and practiced on playing guitar. Sometimes my mother took me to go with her to a restaurant or mall. I also spent my time on reading novel called "Kata". It is a romance book but also has some comedy in it. I love that book.

Sadly, a few weeks ago I heard some bad news about flood in Jakarta. That was a big scary disaster. I thought it was caused by the heavy rain that happened lately and big amount of trash in Jakarta. Heavy rain also happened in Bandung, some areas were also flooded. Fortunately, my house area wasn't flooded. I was grateful for that. I prayed for the people in Jakarta and I hope they were safe.
Because of that disaster, I learned that we should take care of our environtment, we should take care of our earth. We can start by planting plants, throw garbage in its place, or use go-green bags that are safer than plastic bags.

Other than that, when I stayed at home, my grandmother usually baked me a cake or cooked delicious food for me. She is good at cooking and sometimes we cook together. One of the traditional food that she used to make is 'Pempek Palembang" or "Empek-empek". It was so delicious.

THE DEER

Kingdom : Animalia
Family : Cervidae
Phylum : Chordata
Class : Mammalia

DESCRIPTION
Deer are the hoofed ruminant mammals forming the family Cervidae. The two main groups of deer are the Cervinae, including the muntjac, the elk (wapiti), the fallow deer, and the chital; and the Capreolinae, including the reindeer (caribou), the roe deer, and the moose. Female reindeer, and male deer of all species except the Chinese water deer, grow and shed new antlers each year. In this they differ from permanently horned antelope, which are part of a different family (Bovidae) within the same order of even-toed ungulates (Artiodactyla).

DIET
Deer are browsers, and feed primarily on leaves so they are herbivore. They have small, unspecialized stomachs by ruminant standards, and high nutrition requirements. Rather than eating and digesting vast quantities of low-grade fibrous food as, for example, sheep and cattle do, deer select easily digestible shoots, young leaves, fresh grasses, soft twigs, fruit, fungi, and lichens

REPRODUCTION
Nearly all cervids are so-called uniparental species: the fawns are only cared for by the mother, known as a doe. A doe generally has one or two fawns at a time (triplets, while not unknown, are uncommon). Mating season typically begins in later August and lasts until December. Some species mate until early March. The gestation period is anywhere up to ten months for the European roe deer. Most fawns are born with their fur covered with white spots, though in many species they lose these spots by the end of their first winter. In the first twenty minutes of a fawn's life, the fawn begins to take its first steps. Its mother licks it clean until it is almost free of scent, so predators will not find it. Its mother leaves often to graze, and the fawn does not like to be left behind. Sometimes its mother must gently push it down with her foot. The fawn stays hidden in the grass for one week until it is strong enough to walk with its mother. The fawn and its mother stay together for about one year. A male usually leaves and never sees his mother again, but females sometimes come back with their own fawns and form small herds.
